Diving in the Less Diven (Doven?) Dumpsters

Diver: limona

Alias: Covert Citrus Craver

Mission: To find something off the beaten path.

Parameter: Secondary human characters only.

The Pearl: But Inside I’m Screaming by epicinsanity101

Summary: Jessica Stanley must deal with keeping up appearances, her crack-pot mother, amazing/annoying friend/zombies, being chubby, having "pent up anger," and falling in like with someone she hates. MikexJess.
Twilight - Rated: T - English - Humor/Romance - Chapters: 10 - Words: 11,920 - Reviews: 140 - Updated: 7-30-09 - Published: 11-26-08 - Jessica & Mike

Why I read this: Of all the Mike/Jessica fic, this one had the most promising premise. Jessica’s character receives plenty of attention in Twilight, but we only ever see her from Bella’s perspective. Let’s face it—Bella was so busy admiring Edward in Twilight that she probably didn’t do anyone but Edward justice in her narrative. In But Inside I’m Screaming, Jessica has been asked to keep a journal by her guidance counselor to help deal with her anger issues. The story is Jessica’s journal, and parts of it are hilarious. Jessica reveals herself at various times as a comedian, a kid-who-needs-some-love, and a walking contradiction. For example, Jessica is Jewish… but only when she feels like it. When Mike takes her to a diner, she’s worked up it isn’t kosher – never mind that she hangs out at self-same diner with her friends on a regular basis. Jessica’s journal is filled with slang, a little role play, and judicious use of capital letters. In all, this is an entertaining read for anyone looking for a different spin on some of the events of Twilight. It’s also a good read for anyone who needs a laugh – some of the tidbits in here are hilarious.

Alias: Podcaster Casting Net

Mission: To find a good imprint fic

Parameter: romance/humour

The Pearl: Quil Ateara and the Impossible Claire by sockyferret

Summary: In her senior year of high school, Claire is realizing she may have more feelings for Quil than just brotherly love. From Claire's POV. Rated T for language, some sexuality, and excessive use of sarcasm.
Twilight - Rated: T - English - Romance/Humor - Chapters: 8 - Words: 22,433 - Reviews: 170 - Claire & Quil

Why I Read This: I clicked on this one because I liked the name. And while the writing wasn't perfect, it did flow well and I really enjoyed the characters. Claire is charmingly sarcastic and oblivious. Quil has been ever present in her life so she doesn't see their closeness as anything but normal. Near the beginning, Claire falls asleep with Quil lying beside her on her bed. Despite her being seventeen and Quil being around thirty, she doesn't find this uncomfortable or odd at all. It is just the way their relationship has always been. Quil is torn and confused and wants more from his relationship with Claire but is also scared to change the sibling-ish status they already have. When Claire goes out on a date with a boy from school, Quil isn't happy but also doens't know what to do about it, or if he should do anything about it. it was a lot of fun to watch them bumble around each other and discover how much they want from one another.

  1. This post made me so incredibly happy. First off, I am a huge, huge, huge fan of "But Inside I'm Screaming" by epicinsanity101, so it was really great to see that story get the exposure it deserves. I think stories about the minor human characters are few and far between, and people are so wary to read them that the good ones get skipped over entirely. And that's a shame, but some, such as Jessica Stanley's hilarious diary, are definitely worth reading.

Also, an imprint fic. I've never read sockyferret's story, but I just may have to check it out, because for a self-proclaimed shape-shifter fan, I've never really ventured into Quil/Claire territory. But it was just really nice to see a pack fic getting some attention, because this fandom is dominated by vampire lovers who write and read a lot of all human stories, which usually ignore the shape-shifters completely. The boys (and girls) of La Push deserve some love, too.

Thanks for the excellent diving, guys. You definitely made my day by searching in some underappreciaated categories.
