GuestEssay: Canon Fodder Part 1 with giselle-lx

Canon Fodder: The What, Who, Why and How of Canon Twific: Part 1

giselle-lx

“What do you prefer? Canon, or non-canon?”

I cringe when I see this question. Why? Not because I’m worried about what might come of such a discussion or because I’m afraid of being judged as an author who more or less writes canon fic. As skins go, I’ve got a thick one and I put it to good use whenever possible.

No, what makes me cringe is that this question, phrased this way, is almost invariably not about canon fic at all. It generally refers to pairings—do you prefer Edward/Bella only, or is it okay for the occasional Bella/Jasper to creep into your world? Nearly everyone who answers this question will read it as such, and perhaps one poor confused (but actually spot-on) soul will pipe up about their preferences for fic genre: canon vs. AU.

Why has this happened? One issue we seem to run into a lot in this fandom is the use of the word “AU” to encapsulate anything that is non-AH. Typically, though “AU” is used to differentiate fics which keep the canon world but alter its circumstances—“AU” in this sense is an opposite to “canon.” It’s no secret that in our fandom, the all-human genre is still king, and probably will remain so until the fandom dies.
BlondieAKARobin
, author of
Dark Side of the Moon
has some comments on why:
I think it’s the nature of the story, actually. Twilight is, at its heart, a romance. The who and the where and the how (vampires, wolves or humans) don’t really matter. The core of the story is the very simply star-crossed lovers who have to get over monumental hurdles to be together.

Just about everyone loves a good romance staring our favorite Edward Cullen, and where he is or who he is largely doesn’t matter, as long as we can connect to him and re-experience the thrill of reading his romance to Bella Swan once again. But while AH and AU may reign supreme for their ability to put us back in that heart-thudding, swept-of-our-feet courtship, what can get overlooked is the power of the Twilight world itself to drive an equally compelling story—a story told in pure canon.

The One-N Only Canon

First, let’s make sure we’ve got the terminology straight. There is no such thing as “cannon” fan fiction, unless perhaps you’re writing in the Pirates of the Caribbean fandom. I know, I know, you think this is just a grammarian’s nitpick, but bear with me here.

The one-N canon isn’t a word invented by fandom, and understanding its root definition is at the core of understanding how we use it in fic. The dictionary I have most handy (The Oxford Essential Dictionary, American Edition, 1998) gives us two relevant definitions of canon: ‘a general law, rule, principle, or criterion’ and ‘a collection or list of books, etc. accepted as genuine.’

Okay. So with canon, we’re dealing with issues of law and genuineness. This helps us spring forward a bit into the fan fiction definitions of canon.
Wikipedia
gives a pretty straightforward answer:
A canon, in terms of a fictional universe, is a body of material that is considered to be "genuine" or "official", that can be directly referenced as, or as if it were, material produced by the original author or creator of a series.

In Twilight, the definition of canon fic is relatively straightforward (I say relatively because I’ll get into
some of the oddities of it a little later)—the four books, the plots therein, and the timeline established by them set the parameters that a canon fic needs to comply with. In this respect, we’re actually in a great position in Twific with regards to canon. Our canon was laid out for us, in its entirety, in four books which were published relatively quickly. Unlike some fandoms where the creation of the canon is spread out, for example long-running TV series, or Harry Potter, where the canon was released over the course of a decade, most of us knew the entire arc of the canon story going in to the process of writing fic.

This may, of course be why it is a less popular genre in this fandom than in others—there is not as much room to experiment with the “maybe,” seeing as we’ve already got all of the “what.” Nevertheless, there’s still a LOT of room to play while writing a fic which adheres to the canon, and the ability to play with the canon and stretch its bounds a little bit is often the source of the fun.

xaipre
, author of “
Impromptus

[J]ust about any story can be told within the Twilight-canon universe. You just have to tell stories *differently* with fantasy vampires than you do with real-life humans.

I’m Not Jossing You: What Makes a Fic Canon?

So where is the line? At what point is a “vamp AU” actually a canon-compliant fic?

The simplest answer is that if the fic alters anything from the canon, then it moves into AU. But then the question must be asked, what exactly are we considering as the canon, and what defines an alteration? I’ll be the first to tell you it’s slippery, but there are certainly things which mark canon as canon. So come slide down the slope—we’ll start with the clearest-cut and move to the foggiest.

Bella Who?—Alternate POV

One of the most recognizable type of canon fic is the alternate POV fic—where the narrator is swapped out for some other character. Frequently this character is Edward, because who wouldn’t want a little more of our beloved Edward? Some examples here might be
Thy Beauty
by
Subtlynice
and
Dark Side of the Moon
by
BlondieAKARobin
,
for book 2,
Edward’s Eclipse
by
Vixen1836
for book 3, and
Metamorphosis
by
LivesAmongTheStars
for Book 4. Other characters can be useful for these POV switches as well, however—a great example of this is
Luniere
,
siDEADde’s
retelling of book 1 in Alice’s point of view. The hallmarks of an alt-POV are often re-tellings of scenes that we saw in the books, complete with canon dialogue and events. It’s pretty straightforward to identify these fics as being canon—they make it abundantly clear from their format that they are following the books.

I often hear from people who enjoy the genre of OOC fic that re-characterizing Edward and co. allows them to connect with the characters in their own way. However, similar sentiments are often expressed by writers of canon Alt-POV:

Justine Lark
, author of “
Sunshine State
” and “
Bonfire
”
I enjoy writing canon because writing about Edward or expressing his thoughts and feelings in his POV….In my own mind, I’m so attached to him and identified with him that I think that Stephenie writes him out of character sometimes!

Eventually, though, when you’re in another character’s head during the span of the books something else will need to be shown. So this leads us to:

She Left This Part Out!—Missing Moments

Emilie Fauve
, author of
In My Power

It’s like filling in the middle bit of a puzzle, but with your own, hand-drawn image. And then, when it’s all completed, you see how the edges of your artwork line up with the “edge” pieces.

Many canon writers, myself included, will tell you this is how they got their start—by seeing an opening, as it were, in the canon itself and writing to fill it.
Scarlett71177’
s one-shot,
“Playing Footsie,”
was recced to me by a number of people as a wonderful exploration of a tender B/E moment.
xaipre
’s
“Most Dangerous Predator”
imagines an important conversation between Carlisle and Bella before her change.

Often missing moments are one-shots or a series of one-shots, plugging small holes in the canon. But it’s also possible to run a multi-chapter missing moment fic. One that stands out in its creativity is “
Sunshine State
” by
Justine Lark
, which takes on Bella and Edward’s weekend in Jacksonville in Eclipse.

What makes a missing moment canon, when we have nothing to go on from the books? One is consistent characterization. In the fics mentioned above, the characters keep the personalities we know from canon, and typically, this is what the author relies upon in choosing what will happen with the missing moment(s). In addition they don’t contradict the events in the books. That means that if Edward mentions that he was hit by a flying squirrel while he and Jasper were hunting, and the hunt is the missing moment? Well, then, bring on the flying squirrel.

But missing-moment fics may often tend to be short, by their very natures. What if you want to tell an epic story?

Who’s Your Daddy?—Backstory, Side-story, and Future

This is probably where our canon, in particular, gives a writer the most freedom. We really do have sort of a neat closed little package, with some hints of guiderails from Meyer about what may have happened to the characters. But there’s lots and lots of room for writers to fill in the gaps.

As of late, I’ve stumbled across some great new-ish backstories on Alice (
Mary, Full of Grace
, by
Elise Montgomery
),
and Jane (
Becoming Jane
by
LoreilD
). In these, as in all good backstory fics, the authors fill in what we know from canon, while giving us a path that helps explain how the characters got to be where they are.

The canon couples, likewise, are good sites for exploration—just how did Carlisle and Esme fall in love? You might try
EliseShaw’s
No Longer Alone
. Jasper and Alice?
You’ve Kept Me Waiting
, by
Mandi1
.

Another place ripe for canon creation are side stories, filling in the gaps of the characters who danced on the periphery of our star-crossed lovers’ story. And there were a LOT of them. The other kids at school? The wolf pack? All rife for side-story, all canon.

The last part of adding on to the canon proper is—gulp—the future. Although it may seem BD was pretty tied-up, some very fascinating stories can come out of the future of the canon—ones which provide great insight into what the Cullens look like after the “happily ever after” (and which may forever change your perspective on the-baby-who-should-not-have-been-named). There are a number of these, so I will recommend one short fic and two authors to check out:
“5 Times Renesmee Threw a Tempter Tantrum”
by
FictionInReality
, and a number of the one-shots by
Justine Lark
and
Gleena
. Future stories have no way to cling to canon for content, and so they stay canon through recognizable characterization alone. For this reason future fics are a great way to continue hanging out with the characters you loved all through the saga.

You Aren’t Who I Thought You Were—Canon as a Lie

Now, this is where I admit to being a little further out of my league, if for no other reason than given the general low numbers of people attempting of canon fic in this fandom, this particular
type of canon, which is a rarer type to begin with, is particularly scarce. Being a good academic, I site my sources and influences, in this case
minisinoo
, whose experience in fandoms far outweighs my own.

It is possible to write a canon story which presumes that part of the canon was a lie, or at least, which plays with things which were implied in the canon. For all intents, this is the most difficult type of canon to write, because it requires that the author build the story in such a way that the same canon which implied Situation A actually justifies Situation B.
“Beauty, Shining in Company”
by
minisinoo
has an unorthodox answer to the question of how Edward could be so sure he would love Bella even if she grew old.
“For My Own”
by
Strider
gives us a glimpse at exactly what Carlisle meant when he said, “We’ve all slipped” at that fateful dinner table conversation in Midnight Sun.

Now, opinions on this type of canon are going to vary widely, and you may very well disagree with me on calling these canon at all. But what makes them work is the narrow view we got in canon—everything coming through Bella, who thinks Edward can do absolutely no wrong. There’s actually a LOT of room there to suggest that perhaps she or Edward misinterpreted—but it must be done with care.

Jossing and Tossing

The last thing I’d like to touch on is one that is largely not a problem for our fandom—“jossed” fics, or fics which have become AU by further additions to the canon. (Yes, the term comes from Joss Whedon, who did this to his fic writers a lot.) As strange as it may seem to some of us, myself included, who hit the fandom well after the fourth book was released, there are a
still a large number of fics written prior to the finishing of the canon, and which, while canon future fics at the time, are now “jossed” canon.
First Light
, by
BlondieAKARobin
is a perfectly in-canon look at what Bella and Edward’s Happily Ever After might have looked like, before Stephenie Meyer stepped in with her own version.
Heatwave
by
Ruby Wednesday
lets Edward and Bella have some fun pre-BD. Such fics are generally considered to still be canon, as it’s not the author’s fault that the real author stepped in and screwed them up!

Finally, we are in an increasingly-common situation in our fandom whereby the author herself has added to the canon with extra snippets, a half-draft of a POV-switch novel, and interviews galore. There is a lot of cross-fandom debate as to whether these things can and should be considered when evaluating any given work, and there are loud camps on both sides of the debate. My not-so-humble advice on this front is—if it violates the books, you’re in AU territory. If it violates the extras…well, explain why you chose not to use them (sometimes SM’s interviews contradict the books, and that’s a great reason to throw those out).

Whew! It’s a lot to take in, right? Well, I hope it’s been an enjoyable journey through the “what” and the “who” of canon Twific, and gives some sense of how you can ferret out some good canon. Stay tuned for part II: why you might want to try writing it (gulp!) and how to go about doing so. In closing, I’ll leave you with a little bit of the why, from
edward-bella-harry-ginny:

Canon writing is a great way to stay connected to the story we love and fill in what these beloved characters continue to do, even after Breaking Dawn.

Because we did fall in love with a sparkly vampire, after all.

Author Interview: Seventeen Questions with Americnxidiot

Seventeen Questions With Americnxidiot!

I'm americnxidiot. I've been lurking around fandom for 21 months, writing for about fifteen of them. I actually feel a little freaked out now having done that math. Yikes. Anyway my main stories have been You Get Me Closer To God, Cascade and Cyanide, Memoria in Aeterna, Beautiful Beat, and my current story Purgatory: A Love Story. When I'm not secretly writing fanfic, I'm a taurus who enjoys chai lattes, skinny jeans, and sneakily reading fic on my blackberry.

1. What is your idea of the perfect story?

The perfect story for me if one that is angsty, but because of the situation rather than the couple. I do not want super relationship angst in my perfect story - I much prefer ones where their connection helps them overcome some other problem. It has sweet moments, sad moments, and an HEA.

2. Which individual (reader or writer) in the fandom do you most admire?

This is probably an obvious choice for me, but ElleCC. She does so much in this fandom: writes, betas, leaves amazing reviews, and now the ficster, too. And even though she's involved in a lot of stuff, she still manages to stay both on top of everything and a really sweet person.

3. So you write epic heartfail, but love light hearted and fluff. What gives woman?

Sigh, haha. I think I am able to maintain a certain level of distance from my own stuff because I know how it's going to end. Also there's just something about telling a story that requires angst for me. I've tried writing multichapter humor/fluff, and I can't do it. I read fluff because... well, life can be shitty. Fluff can make me smile no matter how the day went.

4. What do you consider the most overrated attribute of Edward Cullen?

Making me go after my favorite character. I see how it is, H. But seriously probably the cheese factor. I can let canon Edward get away with it because he's not from this time period. When AH Edward launches into an epic monologue about how meteors represent his love, I might roll my eyes a little.

5. What do you most dislike about your writing?

I have a lot of trouble balancing description and keeping my narrator genuine. At first I couldn't do imagery at all, so I'm still struggling with that.

6. Which character in FF do you feel the most empathy for?

I think I don't really feel empathy for a particular character, but I do feel bad for whatever character ends up the villain - unless it's one of the nomads, the Volturi, or Lauren. I'm guilty of making Mike the bad guy, because it just made sense at the time, but none of the other characters were ever really cruel in the books.

7. Under pain of death, you have to choose, which is worse, reading Jella or reading a secondary canon couple (say Emmett and Rose)?

Oh secondary canon couple for sure. I just get bored of secondary pairings. Jella makes me mad.

8. Who are your favorite writers?

My favorite fic writer might be Pastiche Pen. I think she has real talent and the ability to write something beyond this, maybe more than anyone else I've seen in fandom. She's a smart lady.

9. What would you consider absolute torture to read?

Okay, scenario: Edward is dead. Bella decides the best way to grieve is to throw an orgy with Jasper and Jacob on Edward's bed. Maybe Edward comes back to life like Juliet, sees the whole thing, then dies of shock again. That would be pretty sucky.

10. What was the one single most unfortunate thing about New Moon (the movie)? How would you fix it?

The lack of convincingly sweet moments to show how in love they were at the start of the book. I think even something like a montage (but only if done well) could have shown that they spent the whole summer deliriously happy. I don't think nonreaders are going to understand why she picks Edward.

11. If you could have written one ff story, what would it be?

Behind Enemy Lines. Sigh, I really loved that story. Either that or something like Work in Progress because that's funny as hell.

12. If you were to die and come back as a character or place from the saga, what would it be? Why?

I think I'd probably come back as Bella honestly - but Twilight Bella, not weird OOC Eclipse Bella. I'd say Leah, but I don't think I'm outwardly aggressive enough. Leah's much cooler, though.

interviewer note: anyone surprised by the first part of this answer please speak up now...

13. What is your favorite cliché? Ever caught yourself using it?

I don't know if it's cliché, but I love when people cleverly work canon quotes into AH fics in particular. I've only done it in angst, so that's not quite as satisfying.

14. Can you listen to Nine Inch Nails Closer now and not think of You Get Me Closer to God?

Never ever ever. This Christmas I was driving my friend home. Closer came on the radio, and I practically dove to change it. Otherwise I would have started laughing or blushing.

15. On what occasion do you wish you could self insert in a story?

If I was to self-insert (and I mean this is a totally not creepy way), I'd want to be Bella in Maybe I'm Amazed. Our high school histories are so similar, but she got the total flufftastic and awesome ending.

16. What will turn you off in a story?

Bella or Edward cheats on the other one. I won't even start Deadward, so I'll stick with the cheating one.

17. Would you have forgiven Edward at the end of New Moon? Oh wait, this is you we are talking about, of course you would. Would you have forgiven Jasper or Rose?

Lolll, I'm just gonna ignore the first half of the question. I would have forgiven Jasper. He was only following his instincts, and he felt really bad about it. I would have a harder time forgiving Rosalie. Her phone call to Edward was purely for selfish reasons.

DrabblerScrambler: A Lemon

A Lemon

Today's Drabbly Babblers

Drabble #1:

As soon as I enter the house, it hits me like a tidal wave – a combination of sweet musk and delicious pleasure tinged with anticipation.

I close my eyes and let it wash over me as she softly cries, “Mmm, Edward, yesss!”

There’s a muffled, masculine groan and then another swell drags me under. They deserve privacy, but I need her release.

I barely register my hand rubbing roughly over denim before it slips under my waistband.

Her whimpers soon reach a quiet crescendo and when the final wave – pleasure fulfilled – crashes into me, we both gasp, then sigh gratefully.

Drabble #2:
"This isn't—ARGH!"

"Sorry." She winced.

Stilling, Edward's exhale was loud. "This isn't working."

"Maybe... if you went faster...?" Bella looked to the book, which was barely within viewing distance.

Edward snapped, "I can't go any faster!" She bit her lip while he resumed his movement, eyes focused, shoulders stiff.

"Just... OH! Yeah, okay." She nodded. This was good.

"You think?" He breathed, hopeful.

She assured. "It totally works."

They assessed their curly creation by comparing it to the photo in the nearby book, The Art of Citrus Garnishing.

Edward declared with a proud nod, "That's one fancy fucking lemon."

Drabble #3:
There’s poetry to the fact that everything started in Biology class. Her body’s scent precipitated the events.

My nostrils flared; mouth watered. I jumped (too quick for anyone’s eye), hit Mike (complete accident), and she fainted over the blood (total luck!).

I lifted her without inhaling, under pretense of assistance.

Outside she roused—and so did I. The heat from her small body scalded my indelible flesh. We both inhaled, and she foolishly advanced. Anticipating the feast, I swallowed.

But then… she licked me.

Her pulse spurred me to the shadows where I went from wet lips to wet fingertips.

Drabble #4:
I am on her, over her, in her, and then she arches and I'm on my back.

My fingers tangle in her hair as she shudders above me. I give one good pull and she's against the wall.

It is a constant struggle for control with us.

It is never sweet, as it should be with lovers, but bitter. It oozes jealousy, weaves together lust and anger, wraps me in a perception of power – hers and mine.

She moans querido even as her mouth on my neck adds to my scars. I spin her, bend her, and add to hers.

Think You Know That Drabbler?

Guest Fic Rec: ItzMegan Goes Groupie

ItzMegan73's

In the story’s opening, we’re introduced to an Edward that we’ve all met before: beautiful, talented and arrogant. However, it’s The Groupie’s Bella that makes this Edward worth reading about. From the moment this story begins, the reader steps into Bella’s shoes and is assaulted with the emotional upheaval of being the girl behind the great, being the reason for it all but getting none of the credit. And this isn’t your typical “always beautiful but suddenly discovered” Bella Swan. This Bella is overweight, sarcastic to a fault and the owner of ten years’ worth of unrequited love. But it’s the characteristics of her personality that reiterate who she is: a beautiful, caring, kind-hearted spirit.

Every chapter powerfully demonstrates exactly what Bella is feeling and makes sure the reader feels it too. Much like the canon Bella, this Bella is relatable. She could be any one of us. We’ve all been where she is…

“When I walked back into that room, it felt like every person sitting there was staring at me, feeling sorry for the poor chubby girl that was in love with her best friend who was, unfortunately, entirely out of her league.”

We’ve all had that gut-punch moment where someone has said something to us that is so emotionally stunning, that we literally feel the sting of the words:

“You’ve never been in love Bella,” he said, as if it was some sort of explanation.

I stared at him, trying not to look like someone had just punched me in the stomach. My heart literally felt like it had fallen to the floor and I fought back the urge to cry. It was absurd for me to feel that way because of course Edward wouldn’t know that I knew what being in love felt like. He wouldn’t know that I understood how scary it could be, how your heart could ache to the point that you literally thought it would kill you. He wouldn’t know that I understood how hard it was to concentrate because your mind was consumed with the thoughts of that one person you loved. Of course Edward wouldn’t know that. I was in love with him, and he had no freaking clue.

In addition to the story of the main characters, the supporting characters of The Groupie have great depth. Case in point: Esme. Her back story gives the plot an element of emotional viability that makes passing judgment almost impossible – and for this story, that’s important.

As the story progresses, there is an overwhelming desire, not for Bella to “get her man”, but for her to stand up for herself; for her to realize her worth and to see herself in the way that her friends obviously do. And when that moment arrives, there is a definite sense of arrival, completion and redemption.

There is one overall question this story begs to have answered: will Bella follow her heart unconditionally, or will she put herself first and make love work for her instead of working for it? The value of this story is the journey the author takes the reader on to get to the answer - to get to that place where Bella pens “Fear will not keep me from giving someone else the peace that I have felt. Even if this turns into a mistake, at least I can say I tried. Once again, I can’t fail at trying.”
ItzMegan73 is the author of such awesome fics as The Tutor, A Rough Start and The Cannabean Betrothal. She writes Edward blue-collared, socially dysfunctional, and oddly virginal - and always hot. She perfers vans to airwalks.

Getting to the Heart of the Matter

And they all lived…

...yeah….

It used to be I heard those words and immediately looked for cell animation and Technicolor. I don’t know about you, but 'Happily Ever After' in my mind is Disney movies and picture books, things I would read to my kid. Not YA or Adult fiction.

That was before I started reading fan fiction.

I’d been in this fandom a few months when it finally dawned on me what people meant when they asked if there was going to be a HEA. Yeah, I'll admit I was a little slow on the uptake, but honestly, I wasn’t thinking about how the stories I was reading were going to end. I wanted to enjoy the journey, not fixate on what happened once I got there. I didn't want to hear about whether or not it was an HEA, for in my mind, that would ruin the whole story.

Yeah, call me a loon, I like to be surprised.

They dynamic changed when I wrote my first story. I remember being on the fourth or fifth chapter and receiving a review that asked me if there was going to be an HEA because the reader wouldn’t be able to continue without it.

Say What???

I’ve come to realize that HEA, or 'Happily Ever After,' is a strange animal in the fan fic world. People have very different expectations about what is or is not a happy ending, and that preference dictates what they will or will not read. Some readers will even decide to stop reading (aka flounce) a story if a HEA is not guaranteed.

To be honest, who can blame them? Didn’t Stephenie Meyer give us the ultimate HEA? That bow couldn't have been tied any tighter if she tried. Well, some would say yes, others would say no, but that is a whole different subject.

Having my own distinct and very warped views on the topic, I decided to some leg work. I sent out emails, made posts on forums, and we even tweeted a survey with six simple questions:

  1. How do you define HEA?

  2. Do you prefer endings more nebulous or do you want it all mapped out - tied up so to speak?

  3. What was your favorite HEA (story) and why?

  4. Will you read a story if you know there will not be an HEA?

  5. Is there a difference in HEA for canon/au vs AH? If so, what and why?

  6. If you could request one thing from authors re HEA's, what would it be?

This, my friends, is the result of those findings…broken ultimately into to perspectives....Team Grimm, and Team Disney.

Breaking it Down, Snow White Style

To help level set, let me give you the difference between the two flavors of 'and they all lived happily ever after (queue fade to black. Sorry folks, in fairy tales, they rarely ever got any...)

The Grimm Brothers Ending:

The prince had the coffin carried to his castle, and had it placed in a room where he sat by it the whole day, never taking his eyes from it. Whenever he had to go out and was unable to see Snow-White, he became sad. And he could not eat a bite, unless the coffin was standing next to him. Now the servants who always had to carry the coffin to and fro became angry about this. One time one of them opened the coffin, lifted Snow-White upright, and said, "We are plagued the whole day long, just because of such a dead girl," and he hit her in the back with his hand. Then the terrible piece of apple that she had bitten off came out of her throat, and Snow-White came back to life.

She walked up to the prince, who was beside himself with joy to see his beloved Snow-White alive. They sat down together at the table and ate with joy.

Their wedding was set for the next day, and Snow-White's godless mother was invited as well. That morning she stepped before the mirror and said:

Mirror, mirror, on the wall,
Who in this land is fairest of all?
The mirror answered:
You, my queen, are fair; it is true.
But the young queen
Is a thousand times fairer than you.

She was horrified to hear this, and so overtaken with fear that she
could not say anything. Still, her jealousy drove her to go to the wedding and
see the young queen. When she arrived she saw that it was Snow-White. Then they
put a pair of iron shoes into the fire until they glowed, and she had to put
them on and dance in them. Her feet were terribly burned, and she could not stop
until she had danced herself to death.

The Disney Ending:

The Queen discovers that Snow White is still alive and disguises herself as a
hag. She finds Snow White in the dwarfs' cottage while they are out at the mines
and offers her a poisoned apple. After Snow White makes a wish, she bites in to
the apple and falls to the ground dropping it. The dwarfs arrive soon after and
are unable to save Snow White, but they chase the Queen up a cliff until she
falls to her death.

Unwilling to bury Snow White, because of her beauty, the dwarfs build a glass
coffin in which to lay her to rest. She is left in the woods, where the prince
from earlier finds her. He kisses her and she awakens. The two leave together to
presumably be married.

Same story, same concepts, but holy cow talk about radically different endings. Saved in irritation or by true love's kiss. Wicked Stepmother dancing to death at your wedding or jumping off a cliff and leaving you to ride off into the sunset without another backward thought. Sick with a dose of real world or saccharine sweet, take your pick.

In a way, you could say that, for the first four books of the saga, SM was trucking along as Team Grimm Lite (sorry Steph, can't grant you full Grimm status). Then Breaking Dawn was released and she jumped the shark to embrace Team Disney on Steriods. Slap a big pretty bow on that box and call it a day.

That, ladies and germs, is the one thing that most everyone surveyed agreed upon. Breaking Dawn changed the way this fandom looks at HEA forever. Or, as so eloquently put by Rameau in her response to the six questions:

Happily Ever After, a fairytale ending, Prince kisses the Princess and the curtain falls ending the show before things get really interesting. Or in Twilight, Bella becomes a vampire and gets to keep everything without making any sacrifices.

See? There is that pesky fade to black again. Jeez.

The big pretty bow concept is the consistent theme throughout the survey responses. While, for the most part, people didn't expect every last T crossed and every I dotted, they did want a consistent, logical ending to the story.

Note: Logical. Not perfect.

That doesn't mean 30 chapters of angst to be followed by a perfectly sunny epilogue, or some other bizarre left turn at the last minute. Be true to the story you create, and to the character's arc.

Sometimes what we think we want isn't always what is the best thing for us...I am ok with an ending leaving me with a few questions, but I need some resolution to the original arc. Alice Dances

Unfortunately, that doesn't always make the reader happy. It's always easiest to talk about what you know, so I stopped to look at the stories I've written over the past year. Only one was a 'tied up all neat and pretty' story, because it fit the characters and the overall arc. My others haven't followed that formula; it didn't suit the story or the characters. I like to leave something to the imagination, hoping that readers will be able to use their imagination to wonder about what could come after, for there is life after riding off into the sunset. Aw heck, screw the reader, I do it for me too. I lay in bed and wonder what if. I think it's half the fun.

But, just like I want to wonder what if, others prefer reassurance, I get that. The challenge, authors, is to do it the right way. That also means not buckling to pressure - just tell the story, okay?

I am getting so sick of people giving away the ends of their stories by letting me know half way through that there will be an HEA!!! YOU JUST KILLED THE JOURNEY! How am I supposed to feel worried if they are going to resolve their problems, or concern myself if they will survive a situation if you have already told me they will?! I want my stomach to be in knots and my heart to be in my throat when someone leaves or is a douche until the next time you update. I want to be scared out of my mind wondering if they will concur their addictions or survive another murderous or n'er do well James. All these assurances are SPOILERS! I don't want to know that Elizabeth will end up with Mr. Darcy. I don't want to know that Darth Vader is Luke's father. I don't want to know that the damn kid sees dead people. I don't want to know that Dumbledore dies!!! EJ Santy

There in lies the challenge. As readers we want hope; as writers, we want to tell a story. There in lies the age old question - how to balance the two.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Yeah, I still haven't quite figured that one out yet either.

So let's step away from the author vs writer conundrum, and talk for a moment about what people feel constitutes a great HEA.

When soliciting input, I watched in fascination as people defined their favorite HEA's. It's an incredibly personal concept, so the responses differed radically (it was like comparing apples and oranges at times). Note I did not use the word 'answer,' for 'answer' indicates there is a right and wrong. There isn't - it's all personal preference.

My favorite response (not because it cited my first collab with profmom) was from JeesieChreesie and hits how HEA can really cover two ends of the spectrum:

While many of the stories I read have HEA none are all that memorable, to be honest. The only one that particularly comes to mind is the Breakfast at Tiffany's Oneshot. While I loved the multichap, the poignancy of this vignette on a whirl wind affair was just beautiful. I could also perhaps say Jandco's Mutually Assured Destruction is a phenomenal example of the HEA being character specific. Holing up in a dirty apartment and throwing away your friendship to be in an obsessive relationship is not what most people would consider happily ever after, but I loved it.

From strawberry pop tarts to two people borderline obsessed and living in filth, the stories represent the two extremes of fic, yet in their own ways, both illustrate the extremes of HEA. How is that for frenetic?

Speaking of two ends of the spectrum, during the survey process, there was one fic cited over and over again as being the best HEA and the biggest huh moment. BrattyVamp was nice enough to go on record about her fic, The Best Man, to directly address the comments that swirled. If you haven't read it - lovely story - I'll say no more for fear of spoiling:

I can say that "shock value" was never considered when I began writing The Best Man. I knew the story from start to finish, before I started to type a single word of it. It was my intention to write a REAL story. I wanted it to be a LIFE story. Sometimes life throws things our way that we would never dream could happen. And sometimes it's the stuff of our nightmares. But I'm of the firm belief that everything that happens in life, does so for a reason. We have an opportunity to grow through any situation. And growth as an individual, growth in relationships, growth in community support, growth in faith.... all of those things can provide a happily ever after- even if the catalyst for growth is painful.

Oh no....yeah, you read right...real life. It's quite a mixed response in the fic world too. Some want to keep it real, and like the turmoil. Others see fic as an escape, a way to get away from real life. They don't want to read what they live. That in and of itself has a huge influence on what we will and won't read.

I could go on and on about people's expectations for HEA. What it comes down to is this:
  • Writers: be true to your characters. Follow the arc, and tie it up appropriate to your story. Don't give away the ending because you feel pressure.
  • Readers: have faith in where the story will lead you. Be open to different types of endings, and trust that the author won't steer you wrong (yes, I'll admit on occasion it does happen, but overall, it's rare).

I leave you with a wise piece of insight on how to wrap up a story with a fitting ending by our resident Carlisle expert, Giselle-LX

Practice closing a novel without tying everything up neatly--the characters had problems, and if their lives are at all realistic, those problems haven't entirely gone away. Let the hints of those things run through the end of your story, even if it technically is Happily Ever After. And just give us a foretaste of what the characters are doing at the end--a hint that probably, they are going to be together and happily so. There's no need to tell us every single detail of how they live out their HEA. Let the reader use her imagination.

My original intent in surveying was to try and create a single, pure definition of what constituted HEA. But doing so would be like pigeon holing people into boxes they don't always fit. We can be Team Edward and Team Jacob, Team Jasper or Team Emmett. We can also be Team Grimm or Team Disney. It's okay to want different endings. I just request that readers allow writers to weave their stories, and writers allow readers to stretch their imagination. Nine times out of ten, you'll get your HEA in spades.

The fun is in the adventure, not the end. Focus on that and everything else will fall into place.

For now, that's all I've got. I am saddling up my horse, and riding off into the sunset, where a tall dark haired man with killer dimples is waiting for me.

And he doesn't care that I am Team Grimm all the way. We'll still live happily ever after.

Fade to Black. The End.

QuickieFickies: Missing Canon Moments

Canon: Missing Moments

So, while nominating stories for the Eddies and Bellies last month, I had some serious trouble with the Missing Canon Moments category. I'm not sure if I just hadn't read a bunch, or if I'd simply forgotten them because they'd been so good that, in my mind, they were just canon to me anyway. This made me really want to seek out some great canon missing moments, and I was so glad to see an awesome stockpile of canon o/s recs submitted to Quickie Fickies over the past few weeks.

Please, I beg, if you read a great oneshot that has under 50 reviews, fill out our rec form. We rely on the stockpile of listings to determine theme trends. Thanks so much!
| Drama / Angst | Canon | Carlisle / Edward | Rated: T/PG13 | 2,866 words | Published: 7-21-08

Summary:
Carisle's pov. Missing moment from Twilight/Midnight Sun. A father watches his son walk away.
Recommendation:
It's a poignant moment for Carlisle when Edward, after that near-fatal meeting with Bella in their biology class, goes to his father-figure to tell him he's running to Alaska in order to save the life of Chief Swan's daughter. In some ways I feel like this is canon Carlisle at his best: outwardly calm, supportive of his son, and fighting his own guilt at sentencing other to his immortal life. He's so well rounded here. I feel like Scarlett71177 captured his character perfectly.
| Supernatural / Family | Canon | Carlisle / Bella | Rated: K+/PG | 9,042 words | Written for:Indie First Time Writer's Challenge | Published: 10/17/09

Summary:
Bella is forced to reflect upon the upcoming shift in her relationship with Mother Nature and she teaches Carlisle an important lesson about responsibility. One-Shot. Canon. ExB. CPOV.
Recommendation:
This is one of those great canon missing moments as the Cullens help prepare Bella for her new life as a vampire. I like how Xaipre strikes a good balance between the humorous interactions we all enjoy in the original series and quiet moments of reflection that we expect from Carlisle. A must-read for canon enthusiasts!

| Angst / Hurt/Comfort | Canon | Bella Swan | Rated: T/PG13 | 2,258 words | Published: 3-09-08

Summary:
New Moon. After Edward leaves, Bella is distraught and Charlie sends her to counseling. But Bella finds her own counseling in the form of Mike Newton
Recommendation:
Something about this story that keeps you thinking about for a long time after it, I have an obsession with the missing months in New Moon and this is the fic that I believe handles it well. As the author says on her profile, if Twilight was written by someone other then Smeyer, it could easily taken this direction.
| Humor / Romance | Canon | Edward / Bella | Rated: K+/PG | 673 words | Published: 11-25-07

Summary:
Before the wedding, Edward sees one of Bella's scars from when she was just a little kid. Upon hearing the story, he decides to show his fiance his own scar - and its story reveals secrets not only about Edward's past, but about his relationship with Bella as well.
Recommendation:
This one-shot is really great. The writing's excellent - but the ending is, by far, the best thing about it. Definitely a great humor fic.
